“What do people gain from the efforts they make? I contemplate the task that God gives humanity to labour at. All that He does is apt for its time; but although He has given us an awareness of the passage of time, we can grasp neither the beginning nor the end of what God does.” (Ecclesiastes 3 v 9-11)
Particles of dust
Blowing, billowing, breezing
In invisible air.
“Can the dust praise You or proclaim Your faithfulness?” (Psalm 30 v 9)
Hardly tangible, or
Real, unseen mostly,
Like Your Spirit.
Yet evident when
Sunfused light shines
In dancing sunbeams,
Showing in snatches
Path and purpose.
Glimpsed, then gone,
Rising and sinking
Who knows where
Or even why?
Floating along collectively
Apparently aimlessly, but
Individually each having
Its own notion
For continuous motion.
A separate agenda?
Or is there
Just one only,
God’s master plan
Began ages back,
And moving mysteriously
In His time?
“ ‘Lord, to whom shall we go’?” (John 6 v 68)
So much we
Cannot ever
Make sense of
Lord, nor go
Anywhere for answers.
“You have the message of eternal life, and we believe.” (John 6 v 68)
I suppose You
Determined it such,
Much to be
Believed in trust
This side of
Eternity’s golden gate.
But one day
When we sit
At Your feet
Whiling away time
That is not,
Then we will
Be able to
Ask and understand
All that as yet
Puzzles and perplexes.
There must be
A reason Lord,
For everything, everybody
Under the sun?
We too, alone
Or together, can
Move in power,
The breath of
Your Holy Spirit
Blowing where it
Surely will, when
We silently wait
For Your light
To be illuminating us.
Drawing us forwards
To the Lord Jesus,
You as family.
“Of those who are sleeping in the Land of Dust, many will awaken, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting disgrace. Those who are wise will shine as brightly as the expanse of the heavens, and those who have instructed many in uprightness, as bright as stars for all eternity.” (Daniel 12 v 2, 3)
Lord, may our faith bring us home to You to rejoice in Your company forever, because we have a Saviour. Everything under the sun has meaning we discover when we keep praying. Thank You for Your Spirit, who helps us to make this discovery, which is so very good for our body, soul and spirit. We offer all praise for the meaning You give to life, especially as we come to know and love You through the Lord Jesus. Amen.
